This law and ethics class is designed for the working massage and bodywork professional.  The orientation of the class is to develop an understanding of ethical issues in a working practice, and, where necessary, to manage any conflict between the personal ethics of a therapist, the national standards of the bodywork profession as they are outlined by various trade organizations, and legal parameters of practice as they might apply to four main areas:

  • Required Curriculum for Tennessee Massage Law Continuing Education Courses and Massage School Instruction
  • Business Practices
  • Dual Relationships
  • Sexuality

Participants are encouraged to bring examples from their own experience in practice to share or explore in class discussions. Wear comfortable clothes and bring materials to take notes. A copy of the current Rules & Regulations will be provided either in person or by emailed PDF forms.

Advanced Lymphatics for the Duodenum, Stomach, Pancreas & Spleen (C119)

Prerequisites: The 10-week Lymphatic Drainage course in 2017 or later. In addition to Cumberland classes above, each therapist should also have taken a minimum of one of the following:

  • C321 – Fascial Freedom Techniques taught at Cumberland OR
  • Myofascial Release 1 by John Barnes
  • T502 – Craniosacral Therapy 10-week class taught at Cumberland OR
  • Upledger’s CS1 Certification

The review is minimal, so be sure that you have been actively using the lymphatic full body sequence. Lymphatic Drainage is the basis for this class and will be demonstrating how to integrate with other modalities.

This class is a part of the Advanced Lymphatics Abdominal series presented by Denise Gleason, LMT, CLT.  This class will discuss the overall function of the Duodenum, Stomach, Pancreas and Spleen including the seasonal cycle and 24-hour cycle of the organs. The class will also provide you with tools to assess from client’s problem description and actions, if these four organs need to be addressed during their session by learning to recognize emotional and physical components.  Additionally, the class will touch on the visceral connections of the four organs and how that can affect other parts of the body.  Lastly, you will be taught a lymphatic drainage technique routine that will help to move the lymphatics of all four organs.

This will be clothed work. Please bring your own sheets, blankets, lubrication and lymphatic essential oils for your own usage. Massage tables are provided. Please wear comfortable clothing with regards to the shirt - be sure there is easy access to the neck (anterior and posterior). Some lecture material will be provided, bring a pen or pencil to take notes.

Five Element Theory(C315)

Five-Element Theory is the foundation on which many Asian bodywork modalities are based, including Acupressure and Shiatsu.  Steve Sommers will describe how the Five Elements emerge from Yin-Yang Theory, and the balancing quality of nature within us.

The Five Elements are associated with external forces of nature as well as internal, human qualities and conditions.  These associations include:

1.  Balanced and extreme emotions, emotional regulation

2.  Organs and Body Systems 

3.  Beliefs adn Attitudes

4.  Seasons of the year

5.  The 24-hour cycle of the day and night

6.  Physical substances which make up our world

7.  The 5 Senses

Discussion will include the interplay of external and internal influences of the Five Elements and how they reveal themselves in the human body, mind, emotions and spirit as well as the cycle and flow of the elements as interconnected and interrelated forces of life and nature.

This is a lecture class; you may want to bring something to take notes with.

In this three-day course, you will learn how to perform a two-hour traditional Thai Massage plus the key to career longevity and satisfaction. This is a lecture class. No table work will be done. An understanding of pressure will be explored while in class along with a discussion of massage techniques that are appropriate.

Self Care & Yoga for Massage Therapists(C903)

Massage therapy requires self-care of its practitioners to have a sustainable practice/career. It is ideal for therapists to have the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual balance required to give the energy it takes to consistently practice massage therapy.

This class will target each of the aspects for overall self-care.

Our goal is for you to leave class having participated in different methods of self-care, so you may bring some or all of these elements into your life and have a more sustainable massage therapy practice.  Class will include yoga asana, savasana, drumming, musical listening and visual art meditation, intuitive movement, tea time among other self-care methods.

This class will be a mixture of discussion, demonstration and supervised practice. Modifications will be offered for those with injuries or conditions that require it. 

Please wear comfortable clothing, bring a yoga mat, set of sheets, blanket, face cradle cover, hand towel, and lubrication.  Massage tables are provided.

This class will include lecture, self–reflection, sharing and exchanging bodywork. Participants need to be prepared to receive and give bodywork.

Course Objectives:

1. Students will be given a brief review of basic anatomy of connective tissue (C.T.) and fascial systems with specific focus on the specific meridian. Students will be given a brief review of basic acupressure theory and its relevance to fascial work.

2. Students will demonstrate the ability to perform varied still and active hands-on techniques for releasing muscular and connective tissue tensions in the lateral aspects of the body including head, neck, shoulders, diaphragm, hips, IT Band, knees and ankles.  

3. Students will leave with an understanding of how to integrate AcuFascial work into their individual practices.

This one-day seminar is an introduction to the art and science manual resistive muscle testing (based on Applied Kinesiology). Participants will learn to locate muscular imbalance and correct it quickly using integrative massage techniques.  Topics will include tests for dehydration and  hypotonicity, as well as evaluation of key muscles throughout the body. We even include a simple and remarkably effective treatment for emotional stress.  Massage therapists deal with muscle imbalance almost every day and it can be causing or perpetuating a wide range of other problems.
